A VERY EASY CHUNKY Beanie

Hello everyone! Today's free pattern is a cute little chunky beanie. I have been working on a lot of large and intricate patterns for knitting and crochet recently, so I decided to take a break from them and make something simple, which I have not done in a while. Over the weekend I made this simple beanie hat in between working on a tank top pattern submission and a cocoon wrap pattern. It has been a long time since I made a hat this simple, not since I was much younger and just starting out with knitting. The hat only took three hours to make, and the pompom took about fifteen minutes. Wanting to share some easy projects on my website, I decide to craft a pattern for this little hat.

This is a great project if you are wanting to take a break from something complicated (like I did), if you are a beginner knitter, if you would like to make a gift for someone, or  if you are simply looking for something to do. A note to beginner knitters, if this your first time using chunky yarn, especially one made from natural fibers such as wool or alpaca, knit carefully as natural fibers this size are often delicate and can pull apart easily if too much force is used.
For $2.00, this pattern is also available for purchase through Ravelry. You can access the pattern via Ravelry link below. A free version of the PDF is also available on LoveCrafts.

Finished circumference: 19" (48cm). The hat will stretch slightly to fit larger sizes.

Pattern Notes

  • The pattern is worked continuously in the round

  • To lengthen the hat for a slouchy look, simply add a few extra rows before beginning the crown decrease

Abbreviations

  • k: knit
  • p: purl
  • K2tog: knit two stitches together
  • Rnd: round
  • St(s): stitch(es)

Directions

With smaller needles, cast on 52 sts.

Ribbing
Rnd 1: *K1, p1; repeat from * to end of round.
Work the established pattern until ribbing measures 1.75” (4 cm) from cast on edge. Place stitch marker for beginning of round. Switch to larger circular needles and begin work on the body of the hat.

Body
Rnd 1: Knit all stitches.
Repeat Rnd 1 until piece measures 6.25” (16cm) or desired length from cast on edge.

Crown
Switch to DPNs.
Rnd 1: *K2tog, k2; repeat from * to end of round (39 sts remain).
Rnd 2: Knit all stitches.
Rnd 3: *K2tog, k1; repeat from * to end of round. (26 sts remain).
Rnd 4: Repeat Rnd 2.
Rnd 5: K2tog to end of round. (13 sts remain).
Rnd 6: Repeat Rnd 2.

Fasten off, leaving a 22” (56cm) tail. Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle and insert it through all the remaining stitches, going clockwise as if to purl. When all of the stitches have been threaded, remove DPNs and pull the tail to close up the top of the crown. Pull tail to the inside of the hat and tie a knot to secure the closed stitches.

Finishing
Weave in ends.
If using, attach the pompom to the hat and weave in any additional ends.
Block as desired.
I hope you enjoyed this hat! If you have any questions or concerns regarding the pattern, please feel free to contact me here. While I work extensively to make sure patterns are free of errors, no one is a perfect machine, and mistakes happen from time to time. I will gladly make an update or post an errata link if needed.

Happy knitting!
